Shift Type: Mostly day shifts; varying 8-hour shifts (start/end times vary by department). On-call rotation with approximately 10-12 call shifts per month. Holiday rotation required. Primarily day coverage with on-call responsibilities.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide specialized neurosurgery nursing care for pre-op, intra-op support and post-op patients with compassion and precision
• Perform frequent neurological assessments and monitoring using NIHSS and other neuro-specific tools
• Collaborate closely with neurosurgeons, surgical teams and interdisciplinary staff to coordinate patient care
• Administer medications, manage drains and lines, and respond quickly to changes in patient condition
• Triage and manage on-call responsibilities, responding to consults and urgent needs during assigned call shifts
• Complete thorough, accurate documentation in the electronic health record to support continuity of care
• Maintain and demonstrate competency through Trinity specialty testing and skills checklists
• Provide patient and family education about surgical plans, recovery expectations and discharge needs
• Follow infection control protocols and ensure required immunizations and health screenings are up to date

Qualifications

• Active RN license (Iowa) with license/certificate verification required
• BLS and ACLS certification required
• TNCC and NIHSS certification required or current
• Neurosurgery nursing experience preferred; comfort with neuro assessments and post-op care
• Completion of Trinity Specialty Specific Competency Testing and Trinity Skills Checklist
• Current fit test, 10-panel drug screen, required immunizations (COVID-19, MMR, Hep B, Influenza, Varicella, Tdap) and 2-step PPD or IGRA as part of onboarding

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong neurological assessment skills and familiarity with NIHSS
• Knowledge of neurosurgical procedures, postoperative care and complication recognition
• Critical thinking and rapid decision-making during on-call shifts
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills for collaboration with surgical teams
• Competency with electronic health records and accurate clinical documentation
• Ability to handle variable shift start times and adapt to department needs
