Roles & Responsibilities

• Prepare the surgical suite by gathering and verifying all instruments, supplies, and equipment are available and functioning
• Assist the surgeon intraoperatively by providing exposure, aiding hemostasis, suturing, cautery, and other technical functions to ensure safe, effective procedures
• Perform proper draping, retraction, suctioning, sponging, tissue handling and apply appropriate dressings specific to the procedure
• Support the OR team concept: communicate with surgical technologists and nurses to confirm items are charged and workflow runs smoothly
• Assist with patient transport, positioning, and total perioperative care maintaining sterile technique and patient safety

Qualifications

• 2+ years of Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) experience — required
• Active NBSTSA or ABSA certification — required
• Active American Heart Association BLS certification — required
• Current skills checklist (within 1 year) relevant to Certified Surgical First Assist — required (document)
• Two supervisory reference forms completed within the last two years — required (document)
• Candidates must provide permanent address (facility has a 50-mile radius restriction and will not consider local candidates) — required
• Prior travel assignment history — preferred
• Comfort with call and weekend rotations

Knowledge & Skills

• Operative techniques and surgical anatomy knowledge
• Sterile technique and instrumentation handling
• Suturing, hemostasis, cautery, and tissue handling
• Patient positioning, draping, retracting, suctioning and exposure techniques
• Familiarity with OR procedures and workflows
• Experience with Epic EMR is a plus
