Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide safe, patient-centered nursing care for Med Surg and Telemetry patients, maintaining ratios (typically 1:5 Med Surg, 1:4 Telemetry)
- Assess and interpret cardiac rhythms and EKG strips independently and collaborate with monitor techs
- Administer medications including drips such as cardizem and non-titrating heparin according to protocol
- Document patient care accurately in Cerner and participate in required hospital orientation and competency checks (including a proctored EKG exam)
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members including physicians, respiratory therapy (24/7), and nursing aides to optimize patient outcomes
- Float between Med Surg, Tele, and Rehab units as needed while maintaining high-quality care
- Support charge nurse operations when assigned, while recognizing the charge role does not take patient assignment
Qualifications
- Active RN license (able to submit) — meet state licensure requirements
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience (Med Surg/Telemetry experience strongly preferred)
- Current ACLS and BLS certifications required; NIH certification noted
- Strong telemetry skills and EKG interpretation competency (hospital requires a 15-minute proctored EKG exam during orientation)
- Proficiency with Cerner or similar electronic medical record systems
- Comfort administering common drips (e.g., cardizem, heparin non-titrating) and caring for common diagnoses: ortho, CHF, COPD, NSTEMI, pneumonia
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Nursing Diploma; BSN preferred but not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Telemetry rhythm recognition and strip interpretation
- Med Surg clinical assessment and care planning
- Safe medication administration and IV drip management
- Electronic charting in Cerner
- Effective communication and teamwork in acute care settings
- Ability to prioritize patients and work efficiently on 12-hour night shifts
