Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide age-specific preventive and curative periodontal and dental hygiene care for patients of all ages — help people keep healthy smiles!
- Perform oral tissue examinations, periodontal therapy, coronal polishing and topical fluoride applications with precision
- Take and process dental radiographs (X-rays) and properly document findings
- Measure and chart periodontal pockets and record vital signs including pulse and blood pressure
- Manage patient scheduling and ensure a smooth, patient-centered flow
- Coordinate and conduct community prevention activities like sealant clinics and health fairs
- Maintain hygienist supplies and sterilize instruments to uphold infection control standards
- Complete required competencies and maintain certifications to ensure high-quality care
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited two-year Dental Hygiene program (required)
- Active Dental Hygiene license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
- Passage of the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 45 days of start and maintained thereafter
- Clinical Competency assessment required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
- High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire and annually
- High school diploma or GED (required)
- Comfort sitting over patients for extended periods and strong manual dexterity
Education
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (preferred)
- High school diploma or GED (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong infection control practices and instrument sterilization knowledge
- Understanding of dental and periodontal disease processes and treatment therapies
- Proficiency in clinical hygiene procedures and dental radiography
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for patient education
- Accurate clinical judgment and attention to detail
- Ability to manage schedules, supplies and clinic workflows
- Comfort working in community outreach settings (sealant clinics, Head Start, health fairs)
