Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform a full range of echocardiography studies (Transthoracic 2-D, M-Mode, Color-flow Doppler, Transesophageal, exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiography) with accuracy and care
- Conduct other cardiac diagnostic testing as assigned, including EKGs, Holter prep/monitoring/analysis, and cardiac stress testing
- Operate and maintain diagnostic equipment (echocardiographs, cardiac stress systems, electrocardiographs, Holter monitors) to deliver high-quality diagnostic data
- Provide age-specific patient care across the lifespan, including neonatal and pediatric populations
- Follow infection control best practices, aseptic technique, and proper equipment disinfection
- Document studies accurately in hospital information systems for scheduling and processing
- Serve as a clinical resource and preceptor to students and colleagues, sharing knowledge and mentoring future sonographers
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to support patient care decisions
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) credential required
- Minimum of 2 years hands-on echocardiography experience (successful completion of a certification program may substitute)
- Preferred: Cardiovascular Sonography certificate or completion of an accredited certificate program
- Preferred: Extensive hospital-based echocardiography experience, including pediatric and neonatal studies
- Comfortable working with hospital information systems and cardiac diagnostic equipment
Education
- High School Diploma or GED (required)
- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) certification (required)
- Cardiovascular Sonography certificate (preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficient in Transthoracic (TTE) and Transesophageal (TEE) echocardiography techniques
- Skilled with M-Mode, Color-flow Doppler, exercise and pharmacological stress echo
- Able to perform and interpret EKGs, Holter monitoring and Holter analysis
- Familiar with cardiac stress testing protocols and cardiac stress systems
- Strong patient-centered communication and age-specific clinical care
- Knowledge of infection control, aseptic technique, and equipment disinfection
- Ability to mentor students and provide clinical preceptorship
- Comfortable troubleshooting and operating echocardiograph and related diagnostic equipment
