Roles & Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain a sterile field for CVOR and open heart procedures, ensuring instruments and supplies are ready and organized
• Anticipate surgeon needs and pass instruments and supplies efficiently during procedures
• Perform instrument and sponge counts accurately and document per policy to ensure patient safety
• Assist the surgical team during open heart cases, understanding the specifics of cardiothoracic instrumentation and equipment
• Maintain strict sterile technique and infection control practices before, during, and after procedures
• Participate in competency testing and skills checklists to maintain specialty proficiency
• Communicate clearly with nurses, surgeons, and perfusion staff to coordinate case flow and patient needs

Qualifications

• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) — required
• Current BLS certification — required
• Current open heart/CVOR experience — required (facility requires demonstrated recent experience)
• Ability to pass Trinity Skills Checklist and Trinity Specialty Specific Competency Testing
• License/certificate verification and ability to meet facility credentialing requirements
• Willingness to be on-call per schedule (1 day/week and every 4th weekend) and adapt to case schedules
• Ability to pass required health screenings, immunizations, fit test, and a 10-panel drug screen

Education

• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) required

Knowledge & Skills

• Deep familiarity with CVOR and cardiothoracic surgical instruments and supplies
• Strong sterile technique and infection prevention practices
• Proficiency with surgical counts, documentation, and OR protocols
• Comfort working in high-acuity open heart cases and supporting multidisciplinary teams
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills in fast-paced surgical environments
• Ability to learn and demonstrate specialty competencies (Trinity assessments)
