Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate psychiatric nursing care to incarcerated patients in a correctional setting
• Assess mental health status, monitor behaviors, and document clinical observations accurately
• Administer medications and follow treatment plans safely and according to protocols
• Respond effectively to behavioral crises and implement de-escalation techniques
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mental health providers and security staff
• Maintain a safe therapeutic environment and adhere to facility policies and procedures
• Educate patients on coping strategies and support discharge planning when appropriate
• Complete timely, clear electronic and paper documentation for continuity of care

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license or Licensed Psychiatric Technician license in good standing (as applicable)
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; advanced certifications encouraged
• Experience or interest in psychiatric care, behavioral health, or correctional nursing preferred
• Ability to pass facility background checks and meet facility onboarding requirements
• Strong communication, crisis management, and teamwork skills
• Willingness to complete the provided two-week orientation

Education

• RN: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN)
• LPT: Completion of accredited psychiatric technician training program or equivalent
• BLS certification required

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of psychiatric assessment, interventions, and crisis de-escalation
• Medication administration and safe handling practices
• Familiarity with documentation standards and electronic health record use
• Ability to work effectively within security protocols in a correctional facility
• Strong observational skills and attention to detail
• Comfort collaborating with security and multidisciplinary care teams
