Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver safe, patient-centered emergency nursing care for all ages
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and document findings accurately
- Administer medications and therapeutics safely and according to orders
- Recognize and respond promptly to emergent patient conditions and initiate life-saving interventions
- Develop, implement and revise individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team
- Provide patient and family education to support recovery and promote optimal health
- Delegate and supervise CNAs/techs and provide leadership during your shift
- Participate in orientation, in-services and ongoing competency validation
- Communicate effectively with physicians, staff and patients to ensure coordinated care
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to hospital policies, standards and infection control practices
Qualifications
- Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska or another U.S. state (direct hires must have applied for Alaska license before start; agency staff must have active Alaska license)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire
- ACLS and PALS to be obtained within 6 months of hire
- TNCC required for Emergency Department nurses
- Clinical Competency Assessment within 3 months of hire (and per SEARHC schedule thereafter)
- High Risk Competency within 3 months of hire and annual renewal as required
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs and meet physical demands of the role
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Active RN license required (Alaska license required as noted in qualifications)
- Completion of required certifications (BLS at hire; ACLS/PALS/TNCC as outlined)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong command of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation
- Infection control practices and safe medication administration
- Emergency recognition and rapid response skills, including ACLS/PALS principles
- Familiarity with ED procedures and equipment (defibrillators, monitors, ventilators)
- Clinical skills such as intubation support, arterial line setup, ABG sampling and thoracentesis
- EKG interpretation and telemetry monitoring
- Clear, compassionate communication with patients, families and the care team
- Leadership, delegation and precepting abilities to support staff development
