Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide focused 1:1 nursing care during labor — coaching, comfort measures, pain relief and documentation of progress
- Monitor, interpret and document electronic fetal heart rate tracings using current NICHD terminology and perform scheduled NSTs
- Deliver total perioperative care for C-section patients from post-surgical recovery through discharge
- Stabilize and prepare high-risk maternal or neonatal patients for transfer to tertiary care when needed
- Perform neonatal resuscitation and provide newborn care and well-baby checks
- Triage OB calls and unscheduled outpatients to ensure timely, safe care
- Educate and support patients and families on breastfeeding, postpartum care and self-care after discharge
- Lead, delegate and supervise CNAs, techs and support staff during your shift and provide clear shift reports
- Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to implement and document individualized care plans
- Maintain competency through mandatory training, certification upkeep and participation in departmental meetings
Qualifications
- Current full, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Alaska OR applied for Alaska license prior to start (agency staff must have active Alaska license)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required on hire; ACLS, PALS and NRP must be obtained within 6 months if not current
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior Labor & Delivery/OB experience preferred
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies (trauma, fetal distress, C-section)
- Comfort supervising and delegating to CNAs, LPNs and support staff
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and on-call as assigned
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Active Registered Nurse licensure (Alaska or applied for prior to start)
Knowledge & Skills
- Nursing assessment and clinical decision-making across lifespan (pediatric, adult, geriatric)
- Medication administration and safe documentation practices (SOAPE/PIER)
- Electronic fetal monitoring (NICHD terminology) and NST performance
- Perioperative C-section care and post-surgical recovery monitoring
- Neonatal resuscitation and newborn care (NRP skills)
- Emergency response skills, including use of defibrillator, suction and EKG monitoring
- Breastfeeding support and patient education techniques
- Strong oral and written communication and interdisciplinary collaboration
