Roles & Responsibilities
- Scrub for cardiovascular (CVOR) surgical procedures across neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations
- Prepare, maintain and manage a sterile field using rigorous sterile technique
- Assist surgeons and the perioperative team during CVOR cases with precision and calm under pressure
- Instrument and pass surgical tools, anticipate surgeon needs, and ensure proper counts and documentation
- Operate and care for surgical instrumentation and ensure equipment is ready and functioning
- Document perioperative patient care and communicate clearly with nurses and surgeons
- Participate in the on-call rotation and respond promptly when called in
- Support unit protocols, infection control measures, and a culture of patient safety
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program (required for hires post-2009)
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Surgical Technologist; CVOR specialty experience required
- BCLS certification required
- National certification by an approved body (examples: NBSTSA - CST, NCCT - TS-C, or AST) — required or strongly preferred
- Proficient computer and keyboarding skills for documentation
- Ability to work independently within protocols, exercise sound judgment, and maintain patient confidentiality
- On-call availability as part of job responsibilities
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program (required for hires post-2009)
Knowledge & Skills
- Scrub responsibilities with expertise in sterile technique
- Perioperative patient care and familiarity with CVOR workflows
- Scrubbing for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations
- Competence in unit tasks assigned by the RN and ability to function independently
- Sound judgment, tact, diplomacy, and strong patient confidentiality practices
- Proficient computer/keyboarding skills for charting and communication
