Roles & Responsibilities
- Process patient specimens accurately and efficiently to ensure timely testing
- Perform testing across chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank, microbiology and clinical microscopy
- Report test results precisely and adhere to regulatory and facility reporting requirements
- Maintain quality control, participate in proficiency testing, and troubleshoot instruments as needed
- Follow laboratory policies, procedures and JCAHO regulatory standards to protect patient safety
- Collaborate with nurses, physicians and other clinical staff to support patient care decisions
- Contribute to a 24-hour lab operation by working night shifts and covering weekends/holidays as scheduled
Qualifications
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) pathway accepted
- Certification from a nationally recognized agency required to be obtained within 18 months of hire and maintained for duration of employment
- For MLT: High school graduate or GED plus qualifying military course OR 60 semester hours with required lab/science coursework
- For MLS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with required medical laboratory coursework (see education details)
- MLT: Minimum six (6) months documented bench experience in blood bank, microbiology, chemistry and hematology
- MLS: Minimum one (1) year of approved clinical laboratory experience including rotations in blood bank, microbiology, chemistry and hematology
- Ability to work night shifts and participate in rotating coverage, weekends and holidays
Education
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): High school diploma or GED AND one of the following: successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course (at least 50 weeks) AND military MOS of Medical Laboratory Specialist, OR 60 semester hours from an accredited institution with either: (a) 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory/Clinical Laboratory Science courses, OR (b) 24 semester hours of science courses including at least 6 semester hours chemistry, 6 semester hours biology, and 12 semester hours of chemical/biological/medical laboratory science.
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS): Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution AND either: (a) 48 semester hours of medical laboratory technology or clinical laboratory science courses, OR (b) 48 semester hours of coursework including 12 semester hours of chemistry (general chemistry and biochemistry or organic chemistry), 12 semester hours of biology (including general biology and molecular/cell biology or genetics), and 24 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory science/technology in any combination.

- Specimen processing and handling best practices
- Clinical laboratory testing across chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank and microbiology
- Clinical microscopy techniques
- Accurate test reporting and documentation
- Regulatory compliance and quality assurance (JCAHO standards)
- Troubleshooting and routine instrument maintenance
- Strong attention to detail and teamwork in a fast-paced hospital lab
