Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, evidence-based critical care to adults in an 8-bed medical ICU
- Manage ventilators and respiratory care in collaboration with RT 24/7
- Interpret telemetry and EKG strips to detect and respond to cardiac changes
- Serve as charge nurse when assigned — coordinate team flow, provide break relief, and support staff
- Float confidently to sister facilities and the MedSurg unit when needed to meet patient care demands
- Document accurately and promptly in Cerner EMR, ensuring continuity of care
- Collaborate with hospitalists/intensivists, pharmacy, and interdisciplinary teams for optimal patient outcomes
- Precept and orient new staff during the unit-specific 1–2 day floor orientation
Qualifications
- Active RN license (eligible to practice in California)
- Minimum 2 years of ICU/critical care RN experience
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, PALS (AHA)
- Demonstrated ventilator management and telemetry/EKG interpretation skills
- Experience charting in Cerner or similar EMR
- Charge nurse experience preferred and ability to perform charge duties
- Willingness to float to sister facilities and MedSurg; comfortable with 1:1–1:2 patient ratios
- Must complete the Relias Dys exam and pass within required attempts prior to acceptance (or have a valid Relias Dys exam within the last 12 months)
- Provide two supervisory references at submittal (one within 12 months and one within 3 years)
- Candidates should not have been directly employed by CommonSpirit facilities (including CHI/Dignity) within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
Education
- Active RN license required; BSN not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Critical care assessment and interventions for medical ICU patients
- Ventilator management and working knowledge of respiratory care practices
- Telemetry monitoring and accurate EKG strip interpretation
- Proficiency with Cerner EMR for clinical documentation and reporting
- Effective communication and teamwork with multidisciplinary ICU staff
- Ability to function as charge nurse and support unit operations
- Flexibility to float and adapt to different unit layouts (horseshoe ICU layout noted)
