Roles & Responsibilities

• Facilitate clear, accurate ASL interpretation in classroom and school settings to ensure full student access
• Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpreting for instruction, group activities, and meetings
• Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and families to support individualized education plans
• Support student communication and social inclusion during lessons, transitions, and extracurricular activities
• Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of services and communication logs
• Attend staff meetings and IEP meetings as needed to provide interpreting and access support
• Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries while advocating for student access

Qualifications

• Fluent in American Sign Language with strong expressive and receptive skills
• Certification such as NIC or state interpreter credential preferred
• Experience working with K-12 students, educational teams, or in a school environment preferred
• Comfort interpreting both classroom instruction and small-group/individual settings
• Ability to pass required background checks and school screening
• Reliable, professional, punctual, and student-centered approach

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Interpreting, ASL, Deaf Studies, Education, or related field preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Deep understanding of Deaf culture and language access best practices
• Skilled in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting techniques
• Ability to adapt interpreting style to age-appropriate classroom content
• Strong collaboration and communication skills with educators and families
• Familiarity with educational terminology and Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes
• Good organizational skills for documentation and scheduling
