Roles & Responsibilities
- Room patients, obtain vital signs, and collect accurate histories to keep clinic flow efficient and providers on schedule
- Perform Point of Care Testing (POCT), specimen collection and lab draws following protocol and best practices
- Administer immunizations and injections within scope of certification and document appropriately
- Set up equipment for routine exams and assist providers with procedures and minor office surgeries
- Operate and monitor EKG machines, cardiac monitors and manual defibrillators as needed
- Lead, mentor and support Clinical Assistant I and II staff to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care
- Accurately document clinical encounters in the EMR and maintain organized patient charts
- Assist with radiology exams and other diagnostics when competencies are met and ordered by providers
- Support patient transport and ensure safety and dignity for children, elders, and impaired patients
Qualifications
- National Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) — required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification — required
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting
- Ability to perform POCT, lab draws, immunizations and injections within scope
- Comfortable operating EKGs, cardiac monitors and manual defibrillators
- Able to complete fingerprint/background clearance (traveler clearance typically occurs no less than 2 weeks after fingerprint cards are received)
- Nursing degree from an accredited institution may substitute for CMA requirement
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) — national certification required
- Nursing degree accepted in lieu of CMA (if applicable)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong clinical documentation and EMR navigation skills
- Knowledge of clinic workflows and how to keep patient flow efficient
- Age-appropriate vital signs and recognition of urgent signs/symptoms
- Good interpersonal and customer service communication skills
- Ability to train others on EMR and clinical tasks
- Competence with specimen handling, labeling, and transport protocols
- Ability to recognize and respond appropriately in emergency situations
