Roles & Responsibilities
- Design and deliver meaningful recreational therapy programs tailored to individuals with mental health needs
- Assess participant abilities and create measurable care plans to support recovery and daily functioning
- Lead engaging group and individual sessions that build life skills, coping strategies, and social connection
- Collaborate with mental health clinicians, occupational therapists, and facility staff to coordinate holistic care
- Document progress, modify interventions as needed, and report outcomes to the treatment team
- Ensure a safe, respectful environment that promotes dignity and rehabilitation for all participants
- Contribute to program development and quality improvement initiatives that enhance therapeutic services
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field (see Education)
- Current credential or certification as a Recreational Therapist (state credential or CTRS preferred)
- Experience or coursework in mental health interventions; correctional facility experience is a plus
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification preferred
- Ability to pass required background checks and facility clearance processes
- Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field required
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or equivalent preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and activity-based interventions
- Skill in group facilitation and individual therapeutic goal-setting
- Familiarity with mental health conditions and recovery-oriented approaches
- Competence in clinical documentation and outcome tracking
- Ability to manage challenging behaviors with de-escalation techniques
- Comfort working within structured facility environments and collaborating across disciplines
