Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor respiratory status and intervene to optimize patient breathing
- Manage and troubleshoot ventilators and advanced respiratory equipment
- Perform airway management and suctioning with compassion and precision
- Obtain and interpret arterial blood gases and support clinical decision-making
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and rehab teams to develop patient-centered plans
- Document interventions and patient responses accurately in the medical record
- Provide patient and family education about therapies and home care needs
- Participate in emergency response and rapid interventions when needed
- Maintain and ensure respiratory equipment safety and infection control standards
Qualifications
- Current Respiratory Therapy credential (e.g., RRT or CRT) or equivalent
- State respiratory therapist license in Virginia or eligibility to obtain license
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; ACLS and PALS as applicable
- Comfortable with ventilator management and acute care respiratory protocols
- Clinical experience in respiratory care preferred; new grads who meet licensure requirements are welcome to apply
Education
- Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent accredited program
- Completion of required clinical training and credentialing
Knowledge & Skills
- Ventilator management and weaning strategies
- Airway management and oxygen therapy
- Arterial blood gas collection and interpretation
- Critical thinking and rapid clinical assessment
- Strong communication and interdisciplinary teamwork
- Familiarity with electronic medical records and documentation
- Infection control practices and equipment maintenance
- Ability to work independently during night coverage
