Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate, evidence-based obstetric nursing care for laboring and postpartum patients
- Monitor maternal and fetal status, escalate concerns, and intervene per protocol
- Float to the medical-surgical floor as needed and deliver safe, competent care across settings
- Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care
- Educate patients and families about labor, delivery, postpartum care, and newborn basics
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient progress accurately in the electronic chart
- Participate in unit-based quality improvement and safety initiatives
Qualifications
- Active RN license (Iowa or compact RN license preferred)
- Obstetric nursing experience and comfort with night shift assignments
- Experience in medical-surgical nursing or demonstrated ability to float to med-surg
- Availability for every third weekend coverage on night shift
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; OB-specific certifications (NRP, ACLS) a plus
- Strong assessment, communication, and teamwork skills
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Clinical knowledge of obstetric and postpartum care
- Fetal monitoring and interpretation fundamentals
- Med-surg nursing skills for safe floating between units
- IV therapy, medication administration, and emergency response
- Clear documentation and electronic medical record familiarity
- Ability to prioritize in a busy night-shift environment and collaborate effectively
