Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, compassionate nursing care to PCU/stepdown patients, including surgical, medical, and occasional neuro cases
- Manage vasoactive medication titration safely and accurately while monitoring hemodynamics
- Perform advanced airway support and tracheostomy care including CPAP/BiPAP management
- Maintain and troubleshoot IVs, PICCs, central lines, A-lines, dialysis fistulas and vascular access devices
- Monitor cardiac rhythms and obtain 12-lead EKGs when clinically indicated
- Manage pain and regional devices including PCA and epidural pumps
- Oversee wound care, including wound VAC application and management
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to develop and update patient care plans
- Educate patients and families on condition, devices, and discharge needs with empathy and clarity
- Respond rapidly and confidently to acute changes, performing interventions such as cardioversion/defibrillation or sheath removal when required
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (state requirements apply; compact license acceptable where applicable)
- Experience working in PCU/stepdown or similar higher-acuity floor (floating within stepdown units required)
- Comfortable with vasoactive drip titration and advanced cardiac monitoring
- Skilled in IV insertion, PICC/central line and A-line management, and dialysis fistula care
- Proficient in airway support (CPAP/BiPAP) and tracheostomy care
- Experience with PCA/epidural pumps, feeding tube care, and wound VAC management
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and other specialty certifications preferred
- Ability to work nights and adapt to a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN)
- BSN preferred where available
Knowledge & Skills
- Vasoactive medication titration and hemodynamic monitoring
- Cardiac monitoring, 12-lead EKG acquisition and interpretation support
- IV access skills including peripheral IV, PICC and central line care
- A-line and CVP familiarity
- Airway management: CPAP, BiPAP, trach care, and ventilatory adjuncts like Optiflow/Vapotherm/Airvo
- Wound care including wound VAC systems
- Pump management: IV pumps, PCA pumps, epidural pumps
- Patient assessment and triage in a stepdown/PCU environment
- Comfortable managing surgical, medical, and neuro patient populations
