Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform microbiology testing including culture plating and Gram stains with accuracy and care
- Process and report blood cultures and sensitivities, ensuring timely and clinically useful results
- Interpret culture and susceptibility data for urine, wound, respiratory, blood and stool specimens
- Operate and maintain identification and molecular platforms such as Biomerieux Vitek, Cepheid, Biofire and BD Veritor
- Follow and document quality control, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting steps to keep instruments reliable
- Accurately input results and chart in EPIC and other lab information systems
- Collaborate with clinicians and the laboratory team to escalate critical results and support patient care
- Contribute to a culture of safety, compliance and continuous improvement in the Microbiology lab
Qualifications
- Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) via ASCP — required
- Minimum 2 years of clinical microbiology or medical laboratory experience
- Valid driver's license required (50 mile radius rule for submission)
- BLS is not required for this role
- Familiarity with hospital lab workflows and acute care settings
- Ability to complete a 12-hour orientation and work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team
- Note: Must wait 12 months from last permanent or PRN shift to be eligible for submission to CommonSpirit as a traveler
Education
- Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) via ASCP
Knowledge & Skills
- Hands-on experience with culture plating, Gram stain and blood culture workflows
- Proficient in culture/sensitivity interpretation and reporting for urine, wounds, respiratory, blood and stool
- Experience with Biomerieux Vitek ID system for organism ID
- Familiarity with molecular infectious disease testing platforms such as Cepheid and Biofire
- Knowledge of rapid testing platforms like BD Veritor
- Comfortable using EPIC for charting and lab result entry
- Strong attention to detail, infection control practices, and documentation
