Roles & Responsibilities
- Collect and accurately document patient information and maintain organized charts
- Take and record vital signs; recognize and report changes in patient condition
- Perform specimen collection and Point of Care Testing (POCT) following protocols
- Prepare patients and set up equipment for routine exams, minor procedures, and radiology as competent
- Assist providers and clinic nurses with treatments, exams, and office procedures
- Administer immunizations and injections as ordered and maintain immunization records
- Operate and monitor medical equipment (EKG, cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter, manual defibrillator)
- Provide safe patient transport within the facility and ensure appropriate observation for vulnerable patients
- Participate in unit and area meetings, support peer cross-coverage, and contribute to a positive clinic flow
- Respond appropriately in emergent situations and perform basic life support as certified
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) OR EMT III required; Alaska (AK) Certification or AK Paramedic Certification accepted
- Nursing degree from an accredited institution may substitute for the certifications above
- Experience working in a healthcare setting preferred
- Comfortable using EMR systems and basic computer applications
- Strong communication, customer service, and organizational skills
- Ability to operate common clinic medical equipment and to train others when needed
Education
- High school diploma or GED (required)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or EMT III (preferred)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required)
- Alaska state certification or Alaska Paramedic certification OR Nursing degree (acceptable alternative)
Knowledge & Skills
- Patient chart documentation and accurate EMR entry
- Medical terminology and clinic procedures
- Specimen collection, labeling, and transport protocols
- Point of Care Testing (POCT) proficiency
- Immunizations and injection administration
- EKG use and cardiac monitoring fundamentals
- Radiology exam assistance when competencies are met
- Emergency response and basic life support (BLS)
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
- Ability to prioritize, organize clinic flow, and support cross-coverage
