Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-acuity critical care nursing in a 16-bed Medical ICU, managing sepsis, respiratory failure, stroke and MI patients
- Assess and monitor critically ill patients; make timely, evidence-based clinical decisions that matter
- Manage ventilators and BiPAP support, troubleshoot in collaboration with respiratory therapy
- Titrate drips and vasopressors safely (e.g., levophed, neosynephrine, cardene) and manage sedation infusions per protocols
- Document accurately and thoroughly in EPIC to ensure continuity of care and clear communication
- Collaborate with hospitalists and intensivists (in-house days, telemedicine nights) to coordinate escalation and transfers
- Verify monitor strips and cardiac rhythms, respond to alerts and support code/STEMI/stroke responses
- Float to Progressive Care (PCU) as needed and support unit operations during high census or staffing needs
Qualifications
- Active RN license eligible for practice in Iowa (required)
- BLS, ACLS and NIHSS certifications required at start
- PALS and TNCC are preferred — bonus if you have them
- Minimum ~2 years of ICU experience preferred, with solid hands-on experience on drips and ventilators
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred but not required
- Driver's license required at time of submittal to confirm radius eligibility
- Ability to pass an open-book orientation exam with a 90% score (pass/fail)
Education
- Active RN license required
- BSN not required (BSN listed as '---' in job details)
Knowledge & Skills
- Ventilator management and ventilator troubleshooting basics
- BiPAP/CPAP patient support knowledge
- Titration of drips, vasopressors and sedation infusions
- Strong critical patient assessment and clinical judgment in high-acuity settings
- Proficiency with EPIC charting and electronic documentation
- Familiarity with centralized telemetry and Draeger monitor systems
- Ability to read and verify cardiac strips and rhythm interpretations
- Comfort working with multidisciplinary teams including RTs, hospitalists and tele-intensivists
