Neonatologist - NICU
Location: Waterloo, IA
Contract Type: Travel Contract
Shift Type: Up to 16 shifts per month; 24-hour shifts (24-hour call) with approximately 8 hours of direct patient contact per shift; variable start/end times based on coverage needs (rotating day/night coverage)
Candidate Pay Rate: $280 per hour

Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality neonatal inpatient care for infants (primarily ≥28 weeks GA) in a Level III NICU
- Stabilize critically ill neonates and coordinate transfer to higher-level care when necessary
- Lead clinical decision-making during 24-hour on-call shifts, ensuring patient safety and continuity
- Document assessments, plans and procedures accurately in Epic
- Collaborate closely with nursing, respiratory therapy, laboratory and imaging teams
- Participate in family-centered care, communicating clearly and compassionately with parents
- Support unit operations and contribute to a positive, team-focused clinical environment
Qualifications
- MD or DO with board certification or eligibility in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
- Completed fellowship in Neonatology (Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine)
- Active or eligible Iowa medical license (ability to obtain licensure required prior to start)
- Comfortable providing care in a Level III NICU and managing neonates ≥28 weeks gestation
- Experience with Epic or similar EMR preferred
- Current NRP certification; ACLS/BLS as required by facility
- Willingness to work 24-hour shifts and participate in on-call rotation
Education
- MD or DO required; Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine required
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong neonatal resuscitation and stabilization skills
- Experience managing ventilatory support and common NICU procedures
- Excellent clinical judgment and ability to triage/transfer when needed
- Clear, compassionate communication with families and multidisciplinary teams
- Proficiency with Epic documentation and order entry
- Ability to adapt to variable census and fast-paced inpatient environment
