Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality progressive care unit nursing for adult (and occasional adolescent) patients with conditions such as CVA/TIA, respiratory distress, and neurosurgical issues
- Monitor telemetry continuously and interpret cardiac rhythms to promptly escalate changes in patient status
- Safely administer cardiac drips and medications including diltiazem and insulin, and manage PCA pumps for pain control
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members (case managers, social workers, PT/OT, dietitians) to coordinate patient-centered care
- Perform thorough hourly rounding and prioritize patient responsiveness and comfort
- Document care accurately and efficiently in EPIC to ensure continuity and compliance
- Use mechanical lifts and safe patient-handling techniques to protect patients and staff
- Support unit staffing needs and float to medical-surgical areas when needed
Qualifications
- Current, unrestricted RN license (Nebraska or compact RN acceptable)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience, ideally in PCU/Telemetry or stepdown settings
- Current ACLS and BLS certifications required; NIHSS required per job details
- Proven competency in telemetry monitoring and experience with Alaris IV pumps
- Familiarity with EPIC charting system
- Valid driver’s license required at time of submission (used for radius verification)
- Willingness to comply with unit policies (e.g., no artificial nails in patient care areas)
- Ability to pass orientation skills exam (open-book) with required passing score
Education
- Active RN license required; BSN preferred but not mandatory
Knowledge & Skills
- Telemetry rhythm recognition and cardiac monitoring
- IV pump management (Alaris) and PCA pump experience
- Cardiac medication administration including diltiazem and titratable drips
- Insulin administration and safe glucose monitoring practices
- Mechanical lift operation and safe patient handling
- Strong patient assessment, prioritization, and delegation skills
- Proficient documentation in EPIC and good communication with interdisciplinary teams
- Hourly rounding practices and patient experience improvement strategies
