Roles & Responsibilities

• Set up and maintain a sterile field for labor and delivery surgical procedures
• Prepare surgical instruments and supplies, perform instrument and sponge counts to ensure patient safety
• Perform surgical scrubbing, gowning, and gloving according to policy and AWHONN Practice Standards
• Assist the surgeon and circulating nurse during deliveries and related procedures, anticipating needs to expedite care
• Assist with skin preparation, draping, and case setup, including updating surgeon preference lists
• Operate and document sterilization processes and ensure proper care and maintenance of instruments
• Respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations following established procedures
• Adhere to infection control and Standard Precautions to protect patients and staff

Qualifications

• Certified Surgical Technologist (required)
• Labor & Delivery (L&D) experience (required)
• Familiarity with AWHONN Practice Standards
• Proven competence in sterile technique, surgical scrubbing, and instrument/sponge counts
• Ability to work under the supervision of nursing leadership and collaborate with the OR/delivery team
• Comfort responding to emergencies and following established protocols

Education

• Certification as a Surgical Technologist (required)
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Sterile field setup and maintenance
• Instrument handling, care, and surgical case setup
• Infection control and Standard Precautions
• Emergency response procedures in the delivery room
• Operation and documentation of sterilizers and sterilization methods
• Understanding of surgical procedures, surgeon preference lists, and equipment uses
