Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered nursing care on a 22-room private Med/Surg unit caring for post-op, sepsis, pneumonia, COPD, diabetes, and infectious cases
- Perform Level 1 trauma nursing duties and assist in acute post-op and medical-surgical management
- Safely titrate heparin drips and manage medication administration with attention to protocols
- Maintain sterile technique for Foley catheter insertions and central line dressing changes; demonstrate competency in SIMs Lab
- Collaborate with a resource RN and charge RN to ensure appropriate nurse:patient ratios (typically 1:4-5)
- Float to other med/surg or telemetry areas as needed and provide professional, adaptable coverage
- Participate in unit orientation, competency assessments, lifts/restraints training, and continuing education activities
Qualifications
- Active RN (Registered Nurse) licensure appropriate for practice in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years recent Med/Surg nursing experience
- Required: Level 1 trauma experience (must-have)
- Current BLS certification
- Demonstrated competency with Foley catheter insertion and central line care preferred
- Ability to pass required pre-employment assessments (DYS exam) and SIMs Lab skills (Foley insertion & central line dressing changes) — note there are two attempts for the DYS exam
- Travelers must have their own vehicle; adherence to facility appearance/fit-test requirements (natural hair color, no facial piercings; men must be clean shaven for fit test)
Education
- Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- BSN not required
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong Med/Surg clinical judgment and trauma nursing skills
- Experience with Cerner electronic charting
- Heparin titration experience (unit uses heparin only; no cardiac gtts)
- Sterile field maintenance and infection control practices
- Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing change competency
- Telemetry experience is a plus (unit may float to tele/other areas)
- Wound care, restraints, and patient lift/transfer skills
- Ability to work with resource RN model and adapt to a new/unit-building environment
