Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver high-quality emergency nursing care for patients across the lifespan — from pediatric to geriatric
- Perform thorough nursing assessments and develop individualized plans of care based on acuity and provider orders
- Respond calmly and effectively in emergent situations, initiating life-saving interventions when needed
- Administer medications and therapeutics accurately and document thoroughly in the medical record
- Manage and document patient care using nursing processes, lab and diagnostic data, and interdisciplinary input
- Supervise and delegate to CNAs/Techs, ensuring safe, efficient team-based care
- Educate patients and families about conditions, treatments, and discharge plans to promote healing and healthy outcomes
- Participate in unit-based goals, staff meetings, competencies, and ongoing professional development
- Support infection control practices and safe use of clinical equipment in the ED
Qualifications
- Valid, current, full and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska required at time of submission
- BLS and PALS required upon hire; ACLS must be obtained within 6 months of hire
- TNCC/ATCN and NRP certifications expected depending on specialty area (may be required within first 6 months)
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior ED or emergency nursing experience strongly preferred
- Ability to recognize and respond to emergently ill patients and implement life-saving measures
- Strong communication, delegation and leadership skills; ability to work independently during assigned shift
Education
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN) required to qualify for RN licensure in Alaska
- Education sufficient to obtain a valid, current, full and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska
Knowledge & Skills
- Nursing assessment and clinical decision-making for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients
- Emergency response and triage in a fast-paced ED environment
- Medication administration and documentation best practices
- Ventilator management, intubation assistance, arterial line setup and ABG puncture familiarity
- EKG/ECG interpretation and defibrillator use
- Infection control principles and safe use of clinical equipment
- Patient/family education, counseling and discharge planning
- Thorough documentation and charting skills, plus ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
