Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate direct patient care including bed baths, tub/sponge baths, and assisted showers
• Assist with toileting, bladder and bowel training, and safe use of bedpans/commodes
• Help patients with dressing, grooming, oral hygiene and other personal care tasks
• Measure and accurately record intake and output and report abnormalities
• Collect stool, urine and sputum specimens for analysis as directed
• Take and document vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, BP) and report sudden changes
• Position, lift and transfer patients safely using equipment and proper body mechanics
• Assist with range-of-motion exercises and mobilization to support recovery
• Prepare and pass meals; provide feeding assistance when patients are unable to feed themselves
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation on hospital-approved flow sheets and charts
• Apply oxygen via nasal cannula, simple mask, or nebulizer mask under clinician direction
• Maintain infection control practices and a clean, well-stocked, safe environment
• Support recreational and reality-orientation activities planned by licensed staff
• Contribute observations to the patient care plan and communicate effectively with patients and families

Qualifications

• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) — current certification is required
• Experience providing direct patient care and ADLs in a clinical or long-term care setting
• Demonstrated ability to take vital signs and assist with specimen collection and documentation
• Comfortable with safe patient handling, transfers and use of lifting/transfer equipment
• Knowledge of infection control practices and ability to maintain patient safety
• Ability to communicate courteously with patients, families and the care team
• For certain assignments: valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle

Knowledge & Skills

• Direct patient care and activities of daily living (ADLs)
• Vital signs measurement and accurate clinical documentation
• Safe patient handling, transfers and range-of-motion assistance
• Specimen collection (stool, urine, sputum) and basic treatment procedures
• Feeding assistance and meal preparation aligned with diet orders
• Oxygen administration via nasal cannula/simple mask and nebulizer use
• Infection control, sterilization/autoclave procedures and maintaining a clean environment
• Ability to support recreational activities and age-specific care needs
