Roles & Responsibilities
- Manage complex neurosurgery and trauma ICU patients with confidence and critical thinking
- Perform and supervise required low-, moderate-, and high-risk bedside procedures safely and efficiently
- Coordinate interdisciplinary care with neurosurgery, trauma surgery, critical care teams, and support staff
- Provide timely neurological assessments and care plans for brain, neck, and spine surgery patients
- Document care clearly and accurately in Cerner Care B to support continuity and billing workflows
- Triage and prioritize critically ill patients, escalate concerns, and support rapid decision making
- Educate patients and families about diagnoses, procedures, and recovery expectations with compassion
Qualifications
- Active Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification with neuro-trauma or neuro-critical care experience preferred
- Current state NP license (ability to obtain CA privileges required) and DEA registration as applicable
- Experience managing neurosurgery and trauma ICU patients, including airway and hemodynamic management
- Proven procedural competency: IV access, intubation, chest tubes, central/arterial lines, g-tube placement, paracentesis, laceration repair, fracture/dislocation reductions
- BLS and ACLS required; additional critical care certifications (e.g., CCRN) strongly preferred
- Must be on active staff at a TJC accredited facility with unrestricted privileges (not solely locum privileges)
- Able to complete the required credentialing application quickly; facility notes application should be completed within 3 days of confirmation and credentialing timeframe is typically 30-60 days
Education
- Graduate degree or certification as a Nurse Practitioner (MSN, DNP, or equivalent NP certification)
Knowledge & Skills
- Neuro-trauma and neuro-critical care assessment and management
- ICU management of post-operative neurosurgery and trauma patients
- Airway management and mechanical ventilation basics for critical care
- Advanced procedural skills including central and arterial lines, chest tubes, and endotracheal intubation
- Familiarity with Cerner Care B electronic medical record
- Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
- Ability to prioritize and manage a high patient load in a Level II trauma center
