Roles & Responsibilities
- Initiate, monitor and manage mechanical ventilation and life support systems per physician orders
- Perform emergency airway management including endotracheal intubation and secure airway devices
- Obtain arterial blood gases and perform arterial punctures, interpret results and adjust ventilator settings
- Participate on the resuscitation team and provide manual ventilation during emergencies and transfers
- Assess patients across the lifespan, including neonatal and pediatric populations, and recommend treatment plans
- Conduct pulmonary function testing and operate pulse oximetry monitoring with accurate documentation
- Lead ventilator weaning protocols in consultation with physicians and provide continuous airway maintenance
- Deliver chest physiotherapy, postural drainage and other therapeutic interventions with compassionate patient education
- Provide outpatient and in-home instruction on aerosol therapy, breathing exercises and oxygen conservation
- Perform equipment care, basic maintenance, cleaning and cold sterilization of respiratory devices
- Assist with polysomnography procedures and EEG electrode placement as required for diagnostic support
- Adhere to infection control policies, maintain confidentiality and keep clinical areas safe and well-stocked
Qualifications
- Valid Hawaii Respiratory Therapist License required
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) recognized by the National Board of Respiratory Care preferred
- Current CPR certification
- Proven competence with mechanical ventilation, ventilator management and ventilator weaning
- Comfortable performing arterial puncture and ABG analysis
- Experience caring for neonatal, pediatric and critically ill patients is highly valued
- Ability to work independently, communicate clearly with physicians and provide patient education
- Flexibility to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays
Education
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRTT) credential (preferred)
- Valid Hawaii Respiratory Therapist License (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of mechanical ventilation modes (IMV, CPAP, BiPAP, PEEP) and ventilator settings
- Proficient in arterial blood gas interpretation and making appropriate clinical adjustments
- Skilled in pulmonary function testing and pulse oximetry interpretation
- Competence in airway management including endotracheal and tracheostomy care
- Patient education skills for disease management, breathing techniques and home instruction
- Familiarity with cardiopulmonary rehabilitation principles and equipment maintenance
- Ability to perform EEG electrode placement and participate in sleep study procedures
