Roles & Responsibilities

• Monitor laboring patients and provide expert, compassionate care throughout labor and delivery
• Perform continuous fetal heart monitoring and interpret strips to guide clinical decisions
• Lead neonatal resuscitation (NRP) when newborns require immediate support
• Provide advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and basic life support (BLS) during maternal or neonatal emergencies
• Collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesia, and pediatric teams for coordinated care
• Educate patients and families about labor progress, postpartum care, and newborn needs
• Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in the medical record
• Participate in unit competencies and maintain required certifications to ensure safe practice

Qualifications

• Active RN license valid for practice in Iowa (or compact privilege where applicable)
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
• Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
• Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
• AWHONN and fetal heart monitoring competency or willingness to demonstrate competency
• Ability to pass required health screenings and background verifications (MMR, Hep B, TB screening, fit test, drug screen, color vision, etc.)
• Comfort working rotating schedules and covering every 3rd weekend

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong clinical skills in labor and delivery care and postpartum management
• Proficiency in fetal heart monitoring and strip interpretation
• Skilled in neonatal resuscitation and immediate newborn care
• Ability to respond calmly and effectively in obstetric emergencies
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills for a multidisciplinary environment
• Competence with unit-specific competency testing and documentation practices
