Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide 24/7 emergency department coverage and timely inpatient orthopedic consultations.
- Manage full general orthopedic care and coordinate transfers of higher-level patients to regional centers.
- Perform required procedures as needed and collaborate with OR support staff for operative cases.
- Document thoroughly and efficiently in Cerner EMR to support continuity of care.
- Respond to callbacks and holiday call duties professionally and promptly.
- Support a small rural hospital’s trauma-level activities with sound clinical judgment and teamwork.
- Maintain credentialing, licensure, and required certificates (including CA fluoroscopy) to ensure continuous coverage.
Qualifications
- Currently practicing physician (post-residency) — not a new graduate; active clinical practice required.
- Valid California medical license (MD or DO) or eligibility to obtain one prior to start.
- CA fluoroscopy certificate (required).
- No negative credentialing issues or NPDB reports — clean credentialing record required.
- Experience providing ED coverage, inpatient consults, and general orthopedic care.
- Locum tenens experience and prior OR support experience preferred.
- Able and willing to travel by car (typical drive from Sacramento to Red Bluff).
Education
- MD or DO with completion of residency (orthopedics or relevant surgical specialty preferred).
Knowledge & Skills
- Solid orthopedic surgery knowledge with comfort managing general orthopedic cases and trauma-level presentations.
- Experience with emergency department workflows and inpatient consultation processes.
- Proficiency with Cerner EMR for charting, orders, and communication.
- Fluoroscopy competency and familiarity with procedural imaging workflow.
- Strong clinical decision-making, triage, and patient transfer coordination skills.
- Clear communication and teamwork skills in a small community hospital environment.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize urgent cases, and manage on-call responsibilities.
