Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist the surgical team during cardiac open heart procedures, scrubbing in and maintaining sterile technique
• Prepare instruments, supplies, and the CVOR environment to ensure efficient, safe procedures
• Anticipate surgeon and team needs during cases to support optimal patient outcomes
• Collaborate with RNs and perioperative staff to provide high-quality care for patients of all ages
• Maintain documentation and adhere to regulatory, safety, and infection control standards
• Cross-cover other OR specialties as needed to support the department’s caseload
• Participate in continuing education and maintain certifications to keep skills current

Qualifications

• Current certification to practice surgical technology in Oregon (required)
• Healthcare Provider BLS (required)
• Cardiac/CVOR experience required — minimum one year scrubbing CVOR/Open Heart procedures OR two years acute care scrubbing experience
• Comfort assisting with patients of all ages, including pediatrics and geriatrics
• Experience working under RN direction in the OR and familiarity with sterile technique
• Willingness to rotate shifts and take call as needed
• Computer application experience preferred for documentation and perioperative systems

Education

• Completion of an accredited surgical technology program (CAAHEP or ABHES) OR military surgical technologist training
• OR: Alternative routes acceptable per employer options (see posting for practice-based experience credits)

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong scrubbing technique and sterile field management
• Familiarity with cardiac surgical instrumentation and open heart workflows
• Ability to assist in multiple OR specialties when needed
• Basic life support skills and perioperative safety practices
• Comfort with electronic documentation and common computer applications
• Good communication and teamwork in fast-paced surgical settings
