Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist the surgical team during operative procedures using sterile technique and sound judgment
• Prepare the peri-operative environment and ensure sterile set-up and instrument availability before patient arrival
• Provide exposure, handle/cut tissue, assist with hemostasis and suturing as appropriate under RN direction
• Use instruments and medical devices safely and in accordance with infection prevention standards
• Assist with patient positioning, transport, and safe movement in and out of the OR
• Participate in unit performance improvement activities and follow evidence-based policies and procedures
• Engage in professional development, competency assessments, and peer review to continuously improve care quality
• Help maintain OR cleanliness and readiness by assisting with turnover and instrument inventory

Qualifications

• 2 years of CSFA experience (required)
• Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential (required)
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program and accredited STFA program (required)
• NBSTSA certification (required)

Education

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
• Graduation from an accredited STFA program and CSFA certification

Knowledge & Skills

• Sterile technique and infection prevention best practices
• Expert instrument handling and sterile set-up/passing instruments
• Comfort assisting the surgical team across a wide range of specialties (e.g., general, ortho, robotics, vascular, gynecology, neuro)
• Patient positioning and safe transport skills
• Suture technique, hemostasis, and tissue handling
• Use of surgical technology and adherence to safety standards
• Ability to follow evidence-based protocols and participate in quality improvement
