Roles & Responsibilities
- Execute routine and specialized histologic procedures on fresh and fixed tissue with precision
- Process specimens, embed, microtome, and perform staining while maintaining quality control
- Handle fresh tissue promptly and properly to preserve diagnostic integrity
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and labeling to support pathology review
- Operate and maintain histology equipment and troubleshoot minor issues
- Collaborate with pathologists and lab staff to prioritize cases and resolve concerns
- Follow laboratory safety, infection control, and regulatory protocols consistently
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts and share practical insights from the bench
Qualifications
- ASCP certification as HT (HT (ASCP)) required
- Proven experience performing varied histology procedures on fresh and fixed tissue
- Experience working in a large Level I facility is preferred and highly valued
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced lab environment
- Demonstrated ability to follow protocols and maintain accurate documentation
Education
- Completion of an accredited Histotechnology program or equivalent training
- High school diploma or GED required
Knowledge & Skills
- Tissue processing and specimen handling best practices
- Embedding, microtomy, and routine/special stains
- Quality control and troubleshooting for histology workflows
- Laboratory safety, documentation, and chain-of-custody procedures
- Clear communication with clinical teams and pathologists
- Time management and prioritization under caseload pressure
