Physician Assistant - Cardiovascular Surgery
Location: Syracuse, NY
Contract Type: Travel Contract
Shift Type: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Day shift); Call 1/week with 1-2 evenings/week operating call from home
Hours per Week: 40
Candidate Pay Rate: $161 per hour

Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform chest tube insertions safely and efficiently to support postoperative care
- Serve as OR first assist during cardiovascular surgeries, contributing directly to positive surgical outcomes
- Retrieve vascular tissues for use as bypass conduits with meticulous attention to technique
- Provide ICU and floor coverage as needed, delivering high-quality adult patient care
- Document thoroughly and accurately in Epic to ensure continuity of care
- Collaborate closely with the supervising physician (Dr. Charles Lutz) and multidisciplinary teams
Qualifications
- Active Physician Assistant license valid in New York (or ability to obtain prior to start)
- Current national certification as a PA (e.g., NCCPA) preferred
- Demonstrated experience in cardiovascular surgery and OR first assist duties
- Proven ability to perform chest tube insertions and vascular tissue retrieval
- Comfortable providing adult ICU and post-op floor care
- Basic life support (BLS) and advanced certifications as required by facility
Education
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program; PA-C preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Expertise in cardiovascular surgery workflows and intraoperative assistance
- Proficient with Epic for documentation and order entry
- Strong procedural skills: chest tubes, vascular tissue handling, first assist techniques
- Ability to manage adult ICU patients and escalate appropriately
- Clear communication, teamwork, and ability to work under variable call demands
- Attention to detail for safe perioperative and post-operative management
