Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate nursing care to patients in a correctional mental health setting, focusing on safety and dignity
- Administer medications and treatments accurately and on schedule, following policy and physician orders
- Assess mental health status, document findings clearly, and communicate changes to the care team
- Participate in patient care planning and collaborate with psychiatric technicians, providers, and custody staff
- Maintain accurate, timely charting and complete required paperwork for continuity of care
- Follow infection control and safety protocols to protect patients and staff in a secure environment
- Support crisis intervention efforts and de-escalation techniques when needed
Qualifications
- Active California LVN license OR active Licensed Psychiatric Technician (LPT) license
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or must obtain upon hire
- Previous experience in mental health, correctional health, or psychiatric settings preferred
- Ability to pass facility security clearance and follow correctional facility protocols
- Strong communication skills and a calm, professional approach to crisis situations
Education
- Graduate of an accredited Vocational Nursing (LVN) program or Psychiatric Technician program
- High school diploma or equivalent
Knowledge & Skills
- Understanding of mental health conditions, psychiatric medications, and side effects
- Skill in medication administration, patient assessment, and documentation
- Familiarity with safety, security, and infection control practices in correctional settings
- Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams and custody staff
- Competence in de-escalation techniques and crisis management
