Roles & Responsibilities
- Assess and monitor geriatric psychiatric patients with compassion and clinical precision
- Implement individualized care plans and ensure bedside safety for older adults with psychiatric needs
- Administer medications and therapies accurately while monitoring for response and side effects
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—psychiatrists, social workers, therapists—to optimize patient outcomes
- Perform clear, timely documentation in the chart and maintain regulatory compliance
- Respond to behavioral crises using de-escalation techniques and evidence-based interventions
- Support discharge planning and family education to promote continuity of care
- Participate in required competency exams and skills checklists to maintain high standards of care
Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse license verifiable via Nursys (California RN preferred)
- Current BLS required; ACLS, PALS, NRP as required by unit
- Ability to complete negative TB test (or documented history), MMR and Varicella record or attest/decline, Hepatitis B and Influenza vaccination or declination as needed
- Negative drug screen and successful background check prior to/shortly after shift start
- Weekend and per diem availability required; preference for candidates available for fuller schedules through end of January and first week of February
- Willingness to complete Prime Core Competencies Exam, Prime Skills Checklist, fit testing and other compliance items within two weeks of start
Knowledge & Skills
- Clinical knowledge of geriatric psychiatry and age-related behavioral health conditions
- Medication administration and monitoring for psychotropic regimens
- Strong assessment skills for mental status, fall risk and medical comorbidities
- Calm, effective de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques
- Excellent documentation and communication skills with interdisciplinary teams
- Familiarity with infection prevention, immunization requirements and TB screening
- Comfort with competency testing and skills validation processes
- Ability to adapt quickly to unit-specific workflows and electronic health records
