Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate direct patient care to individuals in the Mental Health unit at PBSP - Pelican Bay State Prison
• Assist patients with activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, mobility and toileting
• Perform vital signs and basic clinical tasks, documenting findings accurately in the medical record
• Support implementation of mental health treatment plans and use de-escalation techniques when needed
• Collaborate with nurses, medical assistants and therapeutic staff to ensure coordinated care
• Follow strict safety, security and infection control protocols required in a correctional healthcare setting
• Complete the 2-week orientation and participate in ongoing training and competency checks

Qualifications

• Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification or Medical Assistant (MA) certification required
• CPR/BLS certification preferred or willingness to obtain
• Experience or demonstrated interest in mental health care is highly valued
• Ability to pass facility background checks, TB screening and required immunizations
• Comfortable working in a correctional healthcare environment and following facility policies
• Reliable, professional, and able to work the established Monday–Friday day schedule

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required; CNA or MA certification mandatory

Knowledge & Skills

• Understanding of CNA and MA core duties, including ADL assistance and basic clinical procedures
• Skill in taking and recording vital signs accurately
• Familiarity with mental health patient care principles and de-escalation techniques
• Strong documentation and communication skills, including electronic charting
• Knowledge of infection control best practices and correctional facility safety procedures
• Team-oriented approach with good observational and interpersonal skills
