Roles & Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain a sterile field and surgical instruments to support safe operations
• Assist surgeons and the scrub team during operative procedures with precision and calm
• Perform instrument and sponge counts, documenting and communicating counts clearly
• Set up surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment according to procedure and surgeon preference
• Adhere strictly to infection control and patient safety protocols to protect patients and staff
• Complete required competency exams and skills checklists to demonstrate readiness
• Communicate effectively with the surgical team and help coordinate turnover between cases
• Support pre-operative and post-operative workflows to ensure smooth care transitions

Qualifications

• BLS certification required
• Valid surgical technologist license or certification as required by state and facility (license/certificate verification required)
• Ability to complete Prime Core Competencies Exam, Prime Skills Checklist, and Prime Specialty Exam
• Willingness and ability to pass background checks, a minimum 10-panel drug screen, and fit testing
• Up-to-date immunizations and health requirements (COVID-19, MMR, Hepatitis B, Influenza, TB, Varicella, Tdap) as listed by the facility
• Prior OR or scrub tech experience preferred but dedicated learners with strong sterile technique are welcome
• Strong attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, and excellent teamwork skills

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Thorough knowledge of sterile technique and perioperative infection control
• Familiarity with surgical instruments, specialty trays, and equipment setup
• Proficiency with surgical counts and operative documentation
• Strong communication and teamwork in fast-paced OR environments
• Comfort with competency testing and skills validation processes
• Adaptability to different surgical specialties and case mixes
