Contract Type: Travel Contract

Shift Type: Weekday: Monday - Friday, in-house day shifts (8 to 10 hour days; exact start times vary); Night call: 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM; Weekend call: Friday 6:00 PM through Monday 6:00 AM with rounding duties Saturday and Sunday 7:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Rotating coverage including weekdays, nights and weekends.

Candidate Pay Rate: $126 per hour

Roles & Responsibilities

• Assist in cardiothoracic surgical procedures as first assist, supporting optimal patient outcomes
• Perform chest tube insertions and manage postoperative chest care
• Retrieve vascular tissues and perform endoscopic retrievals for surgical use
• Round on ICU and floor patients, managing 5-12 patients per day and coordinating continuity of care
• Diagnose and treat illnesses in the inpatient setting, order and interpret diagnostic tests
• Write prescriptions and handle medication management within scope of practice
• Remove sutures and provide wound care as needed
• Coordinate care with surgeons, nursing, and ancillary teams to ensure seamless patient flow

Qualifications

• Active Physician Assistant licensure for the state required (candidates must already hold the appropriate state license; unable to wait for new licensure)
• Demonstrated experience in cardiothoracic surgery and inpatient/hospital-based practice
• Proven ability to function as first assist in cardiac surgery and perform required procedures (chest tube insertion, vascular tissue retrieval, endoscopic retrieval)
• Comfortable managing ICU patients and rounding on both ICU and floor populations
• Experience with Cerner EMR for documentation and orders
• Authorization to prescribe and experience ordering/interpreting tests
• Willingness to cover weekday, weekend and night call assignments
• Able to complete credentialing process (estimated timeframe 60 days)

• Chest tube placement and postoperative chest management
• Vascular tissue retrieval and endoscopic retrieval procedures
• ICU-level patient care and inpatient rounding workflows
• Proficiency with Cerner electronic medical record
• Clinical decision making: order and interpret tests, diagnose and treat illnesses
• Medication prescribing and suture removal
• Strong coordination and communication skills across multidisciplinary teams
