Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care including bathing, showering, grooming, dressing and oral hygiene
- Assist with toileting needs, bladder and bowel training, and safely position bedpans/commodes
- Measure and accurately record intake & output, vital signs, height and weight; report abnormalities to the nurse
- Collect stool, urine and sputum specimens and prepare them per protocol
- Perform safe patient transfers, lifts and positioning using special equipment when needed
- Feed patients and assist with meal preparation and tray verification according to diet charts
- Document patient care and observations on hospital-approved flow sheets in a timely manner
- Apply oxygen via nasal cannula, simple mask or nebulizer at the direction of licensed staff
- Maintain a clean, safe environment: make beds, sterilize equipment, and report unsafe or malfunctioning items
- Participate in recreational and orientation activities to enhance patient engagement and well-being
Qualifications
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
- Proven ability to provide compassionate direct patient care and support ADLs
- Skill in taking and recording vital signs and observing/reporting patient condition changes
- Experience with specimen collection (stool, urine, sputum) and basic treatment procedures
- Comfort working under RN/RPN supervision and collaborating within a care team
- Ability to apply oxygen delivery devices (nasal cannula, simple mask, nebulizer) as directed
- Willingness to work rotating shifts and across different care units; may include home care visits
- For certain assignments: ability to operate a motor vehicle (as noted in position duties)
Education
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
Knowledge & Skills
- Direct patient care and ADLs (bathing, toileting, feeding assistance)
- Vital signs monitoring and accurate documentation
- Intake & output measurement and reporting
- Specimen collection and handling
- Patient transfer, positioning and use of safe-lift equipment
- Infection control practices and sterilization/autoclave familiarity
- Basic oxygen administration and respiratory support equipment
- Effective communication with patients, families and licensed staff
- Ability to follow care plans and report potential additions/deletions to RPN/RN
- Participation in in-service education and recreational/activity assistance
