Roles & Responsibilities

• Assess patients using critical thinking and the full nursing process — assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation
• Develop, update and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with patients and the interdisciplinary team
• Provide and direct nursing care while supervising and mentoring CNAs, LPNs and other support staff
• Document patient care, condition and response to treatment in a timely, accurate way
• Assist with vital signs, labs review and physical assessments as requested by psychiatry
• Perform phone triage and coordinate with external agencies to ensure safe placement and continuity of care
• Use evidence-based tools, follow policies and infection prevention standards to keep patients and staff safe
• Educate patients and families and document teaching to support recovery and self-management
• Participate in unit performance improvement, staff meetings, peer review and ongoing competency development

Qualifications

• Active Michigan nursing license required at time of submission
• Minimum 1 year of inpatient psychiatric nursing experience (required)
• BLS from American Heart Association or American Red Cross (required and must be documented)
• MI fingerprints required prior to start
• Handle with Cares training to be completed within 2 months of hire
• Proven ability to delegate, supervise and collaborate across disciplines
• Comfortable with patient assessment, documentation and phone triage responsibilities

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong patient assessment and psychiatric nursing skills
• Care planning, implementation and evaluation in an inpatient setting
• Supervision and delegation of nursing assistive personnel
• Accurate, timely patient documentation and charting
• Infection prevention and safety practices
• Use of evidence-based practice and clinical tools
• Patient and family education with clear communication
• Basic life support (BLS) competency
