Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide age-specific preventive and curative periodontal and dental hygiene care for patients across the lifespan
- Perform periodontal therapy, coronal polishing, topical fluoride applications, and take/process dental radiographs
- Measure and chart periodontal pockets and record vitals such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature
- Deliver clear, compassionate patient education on oral hygiene, home care and nutrition
- Manage patient scheduling to maximize access and clinic efficiency
- Coordinate and run prevention activities including sealant clinics, Head Start clinics and health fairs
- Maintain hygienist supplies and ensure proper sterilization and infection control practices
- Maintain required competencies and certifications and participate in quality improvement efforts
Qualifications
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene program (required)
- Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
- Pass the National Board Examination for Dental Hygienists
- Active Dental Hygiene license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license preferred)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 45 days of start and maintained thereafter
- Clinical Competency assessment required within 3 months of hire and every 3 years
- High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire and annually
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to sit for extended periods, strong manual dexterity, and excellent clinical judgment
Education
- Graduate of a two-year Dental Hygiene Program (required)
- Bachelor's Degree (preferred)
- High school diploma or GED (required)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of infection control techniques
- Understanding of dental and periodontal disease processes and treatment options
- Skillful use of dental instruments and radiography (X-rays)
- Proven clinical hygiene techniques and patient-centered care
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for patient education
- Accurate clinical assessment and documentation skills
- Comfort working in community settings such as health fairs and school-based clinics
