Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide expert, patient-centered nursing care across the lifespan in the Emergency Department
- Perform thorough nursing assessments and develop individualized plans of care
- Administer medications and therapies accurately and safely
- Recognize and respond calmly to emergent conditions with sound clinical judgment
- Coordinate patient care with physicians and interdisciplinary team members
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses clearly and completely
- Delegate and supervise CNAs and tech staff, ensuring safe and effective care
- Educate patients and families about conditions, treatments, and discharge plans
- Participate in unit meetings, quality improvement, and in-service education
- Maintain certifications, competencies, and compliance with hospital policies
Qualifications
- Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or another U.S. state required (Direct hire applicants must have applied for Alaska license before start; agency staff must have active Alaska license)
- BLS required at hire
- ACLS and PALS to be obtained within 6 months of hire
- TNCC required for Emergency Department nurses
- Clinical Competency and High Risk Competency to be completed within required timelines
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior ED or specialty experience preferred
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Current RN license required
Knowledge & Skills
- Patient assessment across pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations
- Nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Medication administration and documentation best practices
- Infection control and safe clinical practice
- Ability to recognize and manage emergent, life-threatening conditions
- Familiarity with EKG, ventilator basics, defibrillator use, and monitoring equipment
- Skills supporting emergency procedures: intubation assistance, arterial line setup, ABG puncture, thoracentesis
- Strong communication, leadership, delegation, and teamwork abilities
- Patient and family education and compassionate bedside presence
