Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide expert, patient-centered nursing care across the lifespan in the Emergency Department
• Perform thorough nursing assessments and develop individualized plans of care
• Administer medications and therapies accurately and safely
• Recognize and respond calmly to emergent conditions with sound clinical judgment
• Coordinate patient care with physicians and interdisciplinary team members
• Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses clearly and completely
• Delegate and supervise CNAs and tech staff, ensuring safe and effective care
• Educate patients and families about conditions, treatments, and discharge plans
• Participate in unit meetings, quality improvement, and in-service education
• Maintain certifications, competencies, and compliance with hospital policies

Qualifications

• Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or another U.S. state required (Direct hire applicants must have applied for Alaska license before start; agency staff must have active Alaska license)
• BLS required at hire
• ACLS and PALS to be obtained within 6 months of hire
• TNCC required for Emergency Department nurses
• Clinical Competency and High Risk Competency to be completed within required timelines
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior ED or specialty experience preferred

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Current RN license required

Knowledge & Skills

• Patient assessment across pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations
• Nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Medication administration and documentation best practices
• Infection control and safe clinical practice
• Ability to recognize and manage emergent, life-threatening conditions
• Familiarity with EKG, ventilator basics, defibrillator use, and monitoring equipment
• Skills supporting emergency procedures: intubation assistance, arterial line setup, ABG puncture, thoracentesis
• Strong communication, leadership, delegation, and teamwork abilities
• Patient and family education and compassionate bedside presence
