Roles & Responsibilities
- Lead infection prevention surveillance and reporting activities across inpatient service lines, ensuring accurate NHSN submissions
- Conduct outbreak investigations and implement evidence-based interventions to reduce healthcare-associated infections
- Develop, update, and enforce policies and procedures aligned with CDC, TJC, and state guidelines
- Provide clear, confident education and rounding to clinical teams about transmission-based precautions, PPE, and hand hygiene
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and antibiotic stewardship to identify and mitigate MDRO risks
- Use Epic and Bugsy for documentation, data collection, and trend analysis to drive quality improvement
- Serve in an advisory capacity to leadership and front-line staff, promoting a culture of safety and prevention
- Analyze surveillance data to identify trends and recommend targeted interventions
Qualifications
- Active RN license (WA) or compact state license accepted; microbiologist or Master of Public Health candidates considered
- CBIC certification in infection control (CIC) required — HARD STOP
- Minimum 3 years acute care hospital experience across multiple service lines; experience in surgery, NICU, cardiac, critical care, and ER required
- BLS certification required; additional certifications a plus
- Experience with Epic charting system required and familiarity with Bugsy surveillance documentation preferred
- Strong communication and rounding skills; comfortable advising multidisciplinary teams
- Teaching hospital experience preferred
Education
- Registered Nurse (Associate or BSN) OR
- Microbiologist OR
- Master of Public Health (acceptable alternative)
- CBIC (CIC) certification required
Knowledge & Skills
- Infection prevention practices, surveillance, and outbreak investigation
- Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs): CDI, MRSA, SSI, ESBL and respiratory pathogens
- Transmission-based precautions (contact, droplet, airborne) and PPE best practices
- Hand hygiene programs and environmental cleaning protocols
- NHSN reporting, CDC guidelines, CMS State Operations Manual, and TJC standards
- Antibiotic stewardship principles and collaboration with stewardship teams
- Device reprocessing and point-of-care testing practices
- Strong data literacy: trend identification, surveillance documentation (Bugsy), and Epic charting
- Effective teaching, advisory rounding, and clear communication with clinical teams
