Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized care plans
- Provide 1:1 labor support, coaching, comfort measures, and pain management
- Monitor and interpret electronic fetal heart rate tracings using NICHD terminology
- Conduct and document Non-Stress Tests (NSTs) and respond to fetal distress
- Provide perioperative and post-surgical care for C-section patients from recovery to discharge
- Stabilize high-risk maternal and neonatal patients and coordinate transfer to tertiary care when needed
- Administer medications and therapeutics accurately and safely
- Triage OB phone calls and unscheduled outpatients to ensure timely, safe care
- Offer breastfeeding support and patient education to promote successful outcomes
- Lead, delegate, and supervise CNA/LPN/tech staff during your shift
- Maintain clear, accurate documentation and communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team
- Participate in continuing education, department meetings, and competency maintenance
Qualifications
- Current, full, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Direct hire must have applied for Alaska license before start)
- BLS required on hire; ACLS, PALS, and NRP required within 6 months if not already held
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior OB/Labor & Delivery experience preferred
- Comfortable providing perioperative C-section care, neonatal care, and postpartum nursing
- Ability to respond calmly and make sound clinical judgments in emergencies
- Strong communication skills and the ability to teach and support patients and families
- Willingness to take on-call shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Current RN licensure (implies completion of accredited nursing education program)
Knowledge & Skills
- Skilled in patient assessment, documentation, and the nursing process
- Proficient in electronic fetal monitoring and NICHD terminology
- Knowledgeable about ACOG standards of care for obstetrics
- Familiar with neonatal resuscitation principles and newborn care
- Competent with common clinical equipment (defibrillator, suction, EKG, etc.)
- Able to recognize adverse signs promptly and initiate appropriate interventions
- Experience with triage, stabilization, and transfer processes for higher-level care
