Roles & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver high-quality nursing care for patients of all ages in the Emergency Department
- Perform thorough nursing assessments and document findings accurately using the nursing process
- Administer medications and therapeutics safely and according to provider orders
- Recognize and respond calmly and effectively to emergent patient conditions
- Develop, implement and revise individualized patient care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team
- Provide patient and family education to promote understanding, self-care and optimal outcomes
- Delegate and supervise CNA/Tech staff and provide guidance during the shift
- Operate and monitor medical equipment and assist with specialty emergency procedures as needed
- Participate in orientation, precepting and ongoing staff education to foster a strong team
- Maintain confidentiality, complete mandatory competencies, and comply with hospital policies
Qualifications
- Current full, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Agency staff must have an active Alaska license; direct hire must have applied for Alaska license before start)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) to be obtained within 6 months of hire
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to be obtained within 6 months of hire (as applicable)
- TNCC required for Emergency Department nurses
- Clinical Competency assessment required within 3 months of hire
- High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred; prior specialty experience preferred
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Current RN licensure (see qualifications for details)
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong nursing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation skills
- Ability to recognize and act promptly with emergently ill patients
- Medication knowledge including indications, side effects and complications
- Competence with basic and specialty medical equipment (monitors, defibrillators, ventilators, etc.)
- Skills in airway management, IV/venipuncture, EKG monitoring and emergency procedures
- Excellent oral and written communication and documentation skills
- Leadership, delegation and teamwork abilities to guide staff and collaborate with providers
- Patient- and family-centered education and counseling skills
