Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive hospital-based general surgery care, responding to ED calls and inpatient consults promptly
• Manage EMTALA emergency coverage responsibly and document thoroughly in EPIC
• Perform required procedures including cholecystectomy, hernioplasty, colon/small bowel surgery and minor trauma cases
• Care for ICU surgical patients as needed, collaborating with critical care teams
• Place central lines, chest tubes and vascular access devices safely and efficiently
• Work closely with OR teams to deliver high-quality operative care and support perioperative planning
• Communicate clearly with patients, families and hospital staff to ensure smooth transitions of care

Qualifications

• MD or DO with completion of an accredited General Surgery residency
• Board certified or board eligible in General Surgery preferred
• Active or eligible for Kentucky medical license (temporary privileging available for urgent coverage)
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications
• Comfortable with EPIC EMR documentation
• Experience with hospital-based general surgery, EMTALA call coverage, and ICU patient care
• Ability to perform required procedures listed by the site (see job details)
• Malpractice coverage per facility requirements (discuss with recruiter for options)

Education

• MD or DO; completed General Surgery residency

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong clinical judgment in emergency and consult situations
• Proven operative skills across general surgery procedures (adult focus)
• Familiarity with minor trauma management and post-op critical care
• Clear documentation practices in EPIC and good handoff communication
• Team-oriented approach working with CSTs, RNFAs, first assists and nursing
• Time management and triage skills during high-acuity call shifts
