Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate the NICU care team as the charge nurse, ensuring safe, high-quality care for neonates
• Assign nursing staff and manage patient assignments while maintaining appropriate staffing levels
• Provide hands-on clinical care for NICU patients, including assessment, interventions, and documentation
• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, and multidisciplinary teams to implement care plans
• Serve as a point of contact for families—communicate updates compassionately and clearly
• Mentor and educate nursing staff and new travelers, promoting best practices and unit standards
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and help maintain regulatory and safety compliance

Qualifications

• Active RN license in the state of practice (compact license may be acceptable depending on facility)
• Prior NICU nursing experience and proven ability to function as a charge nurse
• Travel nurse experience or ability to adapt quickly to new clinical environments
• Current BLS certification required; NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) strongly preferred
• Strong leadership, triage, and critical thinking skills for fast-paced neonatal care
• Clear background check and health screening per facility requirements

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); BSN preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Deep knowledge of neonatal physiology, assessment, and developmental care
• Experience with ventilators, CPAP, high-flow oxygen, and neonatal respiratory support
• Proven competency with IV therapy, central lines, and neonatal medication administration
• Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and team coordination skills
• Skilled in documentation and electronic medical record (EMR) use
• Ability to prioritize, delegate, and make timely clinical decisions in critical situations
