Roles & Responsibilities

• Prepare the CVOR for cardiac and open heart procedures by assembling and verifying instrumentation and supplies
• Scrub and assist the surgical team during CVOR/open heart cases, maintaining a sterile field at all times
• Perform accurate instrument, sponge and sharps counts and document appropriately
• Anticipate surgeon needs and provide instruments and supplies efficiently to support patient safety
• Ensure proper handling and setup of specialized cardiac equipment and implants
• Communicate clearly with perioperative team members and support smooth patient flow to and from the OR
• Participate in post-procedure room turnover and restock to maintain readiness for the next case

Qualifications

• Current certification to practice as a Surgical Technologist in Oregon (required)
• Minimum one year scrubbing experience in CVOR/Open Heart procedures (required)
• Certification: Healthcare Provider BLS (required)
• NBSTSA certification or graduation from an accredited surgical technology program is preferred
• Comfort with OR sterile technique, instrumentation, and cardiac-specific workflows
• Ability to support occasional weekends and participate in on-call rotations
• Experience or training in basic computer applications preferred for documentation

Education

• Completion of an accredited surgical technology education program (CAAHEP or ABHES) or equivalent military training
• OR successful completion of alternative pathways with required continuing education (16 hours every 2 years) or demonstrated prior practice as specified
• NBSTSA certification or evidence of completion of an approved training program where applicable

Knowledge & Skills

• Hands-on CVOR and open heart surgery experience
• Strong scrub technique and sterile field management
• Familiarity with OR instrumentation and cardiac-specific devices
• Basic Life Support (BLS) competency
• Operating Room workflow and turnover procedures
• Basic computer skills for electronic documentation and communication
• Team communication and situational awareness in high-acuity settings
